Dear friends and supporters,

Another terrible tragedy has struck the Tibetan people.

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai at 7.49 local time on April 14th, razed to the ground entire inhabited areas resulting in 791 victims and more than 11,477 injured.
The epicenter was in the Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu, south of Qinghai, one of the poorest and most remote areas in this region, inhabited 90% by Tibetans.

The situation in the area hit by the tremor is dramatic. Our contacts in the field have told us at that at the moment Yushu Prefecture is isolated and closed. Some villages have been totally destroyed and, according to our sources, the death toll given out by the press offices is not reliable: unfortunately the expected number of the victims is estimated to be much higher. Many people are still trapped under the debris, many of whom are children and students, and the search has been made even more difficult by the harshness of the region and the difficulty in reaching the areas which are situated at an altitude of 4000 m. The number of displaced persons has reached 100,000 who urgently need food, medicines, water and, most of all, blankets, tents and heavy clothing to protect them from the severe temperatures that can go down to -10°C.

ASIA’s staff in the field are acting with the local authorities, with whom they have been collaborating for years. ASIA is the only Italian NGO in the Tibetan area. It has worked in Qinghai since 1993 and has come to the help of the local population with numerous emergency projects, the last to provide relief for the victims of the earthquake that struck Sichuan in 2008. On this occasion, too, we are offering our experience and knowledge of the area to help the people hit by this catastrophe. There is a lot to do and we have to take action right away. Help us to aid the Tibetan people, donate right away for the population of Qinghai hit by the earthquake.
