In this week’s ezine I’m giving you give some easy feng shui tips for your dining area. I don’t know about you, but in this day and age we often “eat on the run”, or at different times since many of us have hectic schedules that we are trying to balance. 

 For most of us it is not easy to sit down to a family meal every evening no matter how much we’d like to...which tends to increase stress and guilt (especially if we have kids). 

But I do want to point out how important it is to gather as a family or with friends in your home and share a meal at least once a week. If you live alone invite a friend or friends over for coffee or a light meal and if you’re fortunate to have a large family make sure the gatherings are held regularly and not just during the holidays. 

 Catch up with everyone and learn more about their lives and what’s going on. You never know what a “get together” will bring, your family and friends will love it and you may be pleasantly surprised by how you feel yourself. 

Simple Feng Shui Advice For Your Dining Area 

Your dining room or dining area is one of the most important rooms in the house...representing the harmony and quality of relationships within the family. And your dining table when filled with abundance means the family will eat well, live well and never be lacking for anything! Success and good name comes easily to all family members. Here are some things to keep in mind about your dining room furniture arrangements. 

Lighting
 
Your dining room should always be well-lit especially if you go for the more modern and chic look of black, white and grey colors. Your dining area can get too “yin” in nature without some brightness and yang energy...so be sure the lighting is right. You can always add a splash of colour with a bowl of fruit, bright flowers or nice artwork. If you are lucky enough to have windows be sure to keep the drapes open and let the sunlight in. 

Invite a friend for coffee or dinner

Spacious Dining

Some dining areas are very small causing you to feel “cooped up” especially if there are no windows. Eating should always take place in an area where your can feel live bustling energy around you...so perhaps you could dine in your living room if it connects to the dining area. 

If you live alone, be sure to keep music or the TV playing so you don’t eat in silence. Invite family or friends over to share a meal with you to promote the energy of family togetherness and friendship. 

Shapes of Your Dining Table

Long rectangular dining tables are favoured because they represent growth energy...and so the family dining on this type of table is sure to experience personal growth and career advancement. 

 Oval shaped and round dining tables give flexibility for family members to face their best personal lucky directions, and they often save on space. Your dining table should always be spacious enough to allow elbowroom for all who are seated and suggest an appearance of abundance.

Always A Wall Mirror

It goes without saying that all dining areas benefit from a large wall mirror. It’s a very effective way to double the food on the table and since food on the table signifies your wealth and authority this is most important.

There are so many choices today for dining chairs...many are beautiful and very expensive but they do not give good feng shui. Your chairs should have good solid armrests - this symbolizes that as you sit down to eat you are secure in your seat and not “falling off”.

 You should feel relaxed as you sit down to eat but the chair should not be too soft...a little more firm than a cushy soft feel. Of course your chairs should always have solid back support so avoid chairs with open back design.

Are you ready to make the Year of the Water Snake your healthiest year ever?  Look, we've been into the calendar new year for a month now and I'm wondering how many of you are sticking to your exercise regimen, still eating the right foods and in general taking care of yourself?

We Chinese believe that the secret to happiness emanates from a healthy body and mind...they are inseparable. The health of the body affects that of the mind...and both are defined in terms of CHI. The key to a healthy body is to eat a correct balance of Yin and Yang foods...and to reduce the intake of pollutants like chemical and artificial additives. 

The "Chi Theory" of Food

Now as many of you know, "chi" is described as the LIFE FORCE of the human body and spirit. When it is in balance it radiates strong heath and interacts favorably with the environment of space and time. 

When it is out of balance, it becomes weak and this manifests a variety of negative body systems. Hence the quality of your body chi is a vital component of your personal feng shui.

One form of energy or "Chi" is the food we eat - and since it is the easiest and most accessible form of energy, it is helpful to understand the "Chi Theory" of food.

According to this theory the higher up the food is in the echelon of living things, the less favorable it is in terms of being a source of good Chi.

Animal foods are high up the echelon while vegetable foods are in the middle level and root foods are on the lowest level...so the most favorable foods are plants and vegetables but better yet the edible roots of the plants. So a good rule of thumb is the closer to the ground or earth, the more favorable in being a source of Chi.

Tea is Yin, Coffee is Yang

YIN FOODS 

Foods are also classified according to yin and yang. If you follow the Chi theory of food, it is generally accepted that when your body is more "yin" in nature, you will live a longer life because the degeneration of the internal organs is slowed down...thus many people favor a diet of more "yin" foods.

Yin foods are also ideal for those who feel stressed out, irritable and under pressure as they serve to calm the spirit and revitalize the inner Chi essence...and they are generally best consumed during the summer "yang" months to help keep the body in balance.

Do be aware that too much yin food in the body reveals itself in forgetfulness, tiredness, lethargy and a general feeling of listlessness. Bodily symptoms could manifest in the form of diarrhea, pale complexion and lack of color in the eyes and skin. 

If you observe these symptoms you may want to up your intake of YANG foods. For your reference I have included a list of yin & yang foods which is by no means exhaustive but will give you some ideas.
 

YIN Foods Foods that are green or white in color and slow to cook Grain products Beans of green variety Plain rice and porridge Plain tofu bean curd Melons Seaweed Green vegetables White vegetables Water Tea Boiled and Steamed Foods Foods that are cool and bland Cooking tips to make your food more YIN Use less heat, less salt and less cooking time Some suggested methods of cooking are boiling, poaching and steaming Use fresh raw foods and steam them In the summer when temperatures are higher (YANG) try a lighter style of cooking using less spices and more fresh, raw foods so that the energy that dominates will be YIN

Stressed out? Eat more Yin Foods

YANG FOODS 

Yang foods on the other hand are usually rich, heavily flavored strongly sauced and hot, often fried and best eaten during the winter "yin" months. Yang foods are excellent for those who are chronically short of energy (your body is depleted of yang essence and will benefit from extra yang chi) and also for new mothers.

When there is an excess of Yang foods in the body, you may find bodily symptoms such as heartburn, constipation, cold sores, rashes, pimples, acne and ulcers and when you observe such symptoms you may want to increase your intake of Yin foods.

The key to a healthy body is to eat the correct balance of yin and yang foods...so if you're feeling stressed try more yin foods, and if you're tired and listless add more yang foods to your diet.

2) The Illness Star 2 in the Southwest

To Subdue this Star: Display the Namgyalma Plaque high in your living room to improve health. Place a Anrensui Wu Lou or Wu Lou with crane and bamboo in the Southwest of your home. 3) The Quarrelsome Star 3 in the East

This argumentative star flies to the EAST bringing litigation, quarrels, misunderstandings and trouble with the authorities. The Eldest Son is adversely affected by this star so expect your eldest son to be more temperamental this year.

Animal Signs affected: The Rabbit is highly afflicted this year. In addition to this hostile star the Rabbit has to survive the Three Killings and the Natural Disaster star which flies into the East. The Rabbit must wear the Kalachakra pendant throughout the year to avert severe obstacles. Place the Ksitigharbha with Three Celestial Guardians to subdue the Three Killings and keep the Natural Disaster star under control.
To Subdue this Star: Place the Flaming Magic Wheel with sword or 3 Legged Bird with Sun here. The Rabbit should carry the Flaming Wheel Key Chain or the Peace and Harmony Amulet throughout the year. If this is your entrance, keep the lights on throughout the year and remove water and plants from the area.


4) The Robbery Star 7 in the West

The Number 7 Robbery and Violence star flies into the WEST affecting the luck of Descendants and family. There is the kind of year where sibling rivalry and problems with conceiving can upset the family unit. Danger from metal arms is indicated for those whose bedrooms or entrances face West or located in the West sector.

Animal Signs affected: The Rooster is badly afflicted by this star and should carry the Night Safety Amulet or the HUM Anti-Robbery Amulet throughout the year. 1. Wealth Star 8 in the Northeast

It doesn’t count if you do this on purpose, but if for some reason you wear your clothes the wrong way round, it indicates that you will shortly receive some windfall or some very favourable news. This is a particularly good omen for those who have been suffering a spate of bad luck, as it suggests that your luck is about to change for the better.
	Finding A Good Luck Symbol Such as an acorn, a four-leaf clover, a horseshoe, a coin all spell good luck of some kind coming your way. Black dogs bring wealth and protection. Golden dogs bring prosperity and happiness and white dogs bring love and romance.
